When it’s not too snowy, our chickens continue to free-range the property, preferring to seek shelter under their coop, or to soak up the sun near this wood pile. My thoughtful father gave Brian and I a new telephoto lens for our camera, and I am so in love. Even though these birds are only a few feet outside our kitchen window, I am able to capture so wonderfully their unique expressions and behavior. I have never before been such a bird-gawker, but installing a simple tray feeder outside our east-facing window has brought us such joy! We are regularly visited by Cardinals, Blue Jays, Tufted Titmouse (Titmice?), and Dark-Eyed Juncos. Snow blankets the garden, and I dream of the seeds I will soon purchase. Enjoying a frolic on our hillside on New Year’s Eve.

Oh my you have a lovely blog and a beautiful family. Right now out our door there is much snow and ice. I am surprised at how much snow we have and it is only the beginning of January!

Thanks for saying hello Cheryl. We have gotten another 4 or 5 inches this week. I am hoping to go sledding to enjoy it!

In the last couple of years I have hopped on board the bird feeding train and I LOVE IT. Hummingbird feeders, tray feeders, hanging dried sunflowers from trees, etc. I only have 4 feeders at various places in the yard (and my beloved hummingbird feeder right outside my window because they are entrancing to watch) but they give me SUCH a sense of joy and wonder. I’m always stopping to see who’s rustling in the feeder now.
That lens is incredible – such detail!

Yes, that is exactly how I feel! We just bought our second feeder, for suet. No takers yet!

Great close-ups! What is the size of the lens? The one I have for our Rebel 3 is a zoom lens, 55-250mm. It works great as a medium telephoto, i.e., brings images of people/wildlife in pretty close, but can’t get the kind of “close-up” images you have here, though I guess it depends on how close you were to the subjects. Been wanting to get bigger telephoto lens for a while now.
Does it require a tripod? Btw, I have read that when using a tripod you should turn off the stabilizer mode regardless of lens size. Not sure why.
Thanks, Ron

This is actually a 75-300mm lens, so I guess it’s midrange. But much more zoom than our lens that came with the camera. I was only a few feet away from these birds!!

Oh, and no, I didn’t use a tripod for these particular shots.
