A few more windows to go, a bit more house wrap, and a lot of insulation and then we shift attention to the interior of the house.

Heading into year 3 of yurt living (and looking longingly at the house each day), it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the work ahead of us. The excitement is still palpable, but the fatigue is setting in. And I’m not even the one up on a tall ladder in the freezing cold putting up insulation!!

It will be fun to get inside where we can all be much more helpful and our skill sets more appropriate to the tasks at hand!

Building a house is truly a labor of love and a leap of enormous faith ❤️

While I do love quick-growing spring radishes, some of my favorite winter storage crops are what are known as “winter radishes.”

Winter radishes are harvested in the fall or winter and typically have a thicker skin and a watery crunch. They do well in cool storage and provide some lovely crunch when you’re in soup & stew season.

Pictured here is a purple daikon, a watermelon radish, and a black winter radish. I love to slice them thin and sprinkle them with salt. Or you can grate them into a salad. Or quick pickle them with some vinegar, salt, and sugar.

Excavation work is done for the season and all of the piles of rocks and dirt are gone. Which means that we get to start playing with the backyard patio-garden space!

Fall gardening has helped me double my harvests, extend the season well into November, and save tons of money in the grocery store.

But a successful fall garden took me a few seasons to master. It takes a bit more effort, but the results are so worth it! These photos are all from my Vermont garden on October 29!

Cauliflower, broccoli, kale, cabbage, tatsoi, and so much more are thriving in the fall garden, thanks to a combination of row cover and a mild October.

Each year I love fall gardening even more. I could have started a few crops earlier (cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower) but some were exactly spot-on and are thriving (tatsoi, carrots, kale)!

And since we added a high tunnel this year, we’re still harvesting peppers and tomatoes. It’s the perfect harvest.
